I have two images [actually pieces of clipart but I think that’s irrelevant] each of which has a colored object against a white background. I’d like to create a single image that has one object overlaying the other as if its white background is transparent. I found one way to do this by changing the background to black and then fooling with the layer transparency but I have the intuitive feeling that there’s a quicker and easier way I haven’t found. All suggestions, hints, URL’s, etc, graciously accepted. TIA

Try setting to Multiply or Screen or Overlay in the Modes dropdown on the Layers palette. Not sure what effect you’re after but blending modes is one way.

I thought I did that and got nothing but I’ll try again.

What I’m trying to do is to overlay two non-rectangular images, each with a white "background". I want the area of the image that’s pure white to be transparent so I can see the underlying layer through it.

Layer 2 (above). Select background white and press Delete key

Before you start Norm, you need to begin with the background image. Next you need to open one of your clip art pieces and mask the part of the image you want to use. Ctrl+c (under windows) will copy the masked area to the clipboard. Move to the background and press Ctrl+v to past the image. You’ll see an extra layer created. Do the same with the second image.

"Show bounding box" will give you little handles on the image which you can use the mouse to drag them into place and re-size. Hold the shift key during resizing to keep the aspect ratio. Experiment on this and you’ll get some basic skills you can add to until you get quite good at it.
