I have been using PS products for a few years (earlier versions of PS, PS Elements, etc.) and am currently using PS CS. I know most of the basics – enough to do most touch-ups and adjustments for digital photos and some VERY basic restorations of old family stuff. But I would really love to learn the more advanced techniques that I am sure the program is capable of. (Currently taking the photography course at NYIP, so the interest is definitely there.)
Can anyone recommend a good book to LEARN Photoshop. One that takes you from the basics through the advanced stuff in a school lesson format. (Not one where I have a question/problem and I take the book out to look it up.) Thanks for any advice.

The Adobe Classroom in a Book for PhotoShop is a good starting point, then move to the specialized books which are not a rewritten manual. I favor the books published by http://www.newriders.com/

Steve there is one to be released in July which is just Photoshop Projects. I have seen a sort of preview and it looks brilliant. Its in full color and in large format with every single project illustrated throughout the process. Anyway you may want to enquire. From what I have seen, I think its going to be a bible for beginners. I think its being published by Nostarch Press.
