Increasing brush size with the square bracket keys will on occasion cease to function, and I am left with cross hairs that refuse to resize at all. ( Photoshop 7)

My preferences appear to be correctly set, so I’m at a bit of a loss as to how I resolve this minor irritant.

Any helpful advice will be gratefully received.

I run on a Pentium 4 with XP.

Hope somebody can help.

Just a thought! Try hitting the caps lock key.
It caught me a few years ago.

Also, check the size of the brush in the tool bar, sometimes the brush is so big in relation to the picture or part of the picture you are working on that its edges are not visible.
All you see is the cross in the center. When reducing you start seeing the brush only when it fits in your image.
I got tricked a few times and like you I thought the brackets short cut had stopped working.

Thanks for your much appreciated input Stephan. As it happens ‘Dave’s’ Caps lock suggestion did the trick, but I’ve noted your comment in case of any future hiccups:-)
