I received a jpeg file by email. When I try to open it with Photoshop, it gives me an error message "Could not open ~_SCF0008 because a JPEG marker segment length is too short (the file may be truncated or incomplete).
Can someone help me with this? Thank you!!!

Have the sender email the image again. If they can, have them ZIP the file, this is common when emailing files.

Nathalie,

Odds are that the file is corrupt. The error message is basically Photoshop’s way of telling you that something in the file isn’t where it should be.

You do have some options, though. I’ve found that some other programs like Corel Photopaint might have success at least partially opening the file. Typically what you’ll see then is a streak of garbled image information that cuts across the picture. Sometimes you can clone it out, sometimes not.

If you don’t have Photopaint, I’d be happy to give it a whirl for you and see what happens (my email address can be found by clicking on my name). Or go to a site like download.com and do a search for image viewer or picture viewer. At the outset it should at least be a free download and let you either look at the picture or perhaps re-save the image in some other format.

Of course, the easiest thing would be to ask the person who sent you the file to resave and resend the image. That should take care of the problem.

If you can’t get it sent again, try opening it in something else, such as a Web browser, then save it again from there.

First, make sure that the extension on the file name is *.jpg. Sometimes I will rename a file in a different program and it will drop the .jpg and PS will give that message. I also use ACDsee for my browser. If ACDsee cannot "see" it, the file is truly gone. Truncated Jpg’s will show up but cut off at some point.
