I tried to open an .eps file in Photoshop 5.5 and got an error which states "Could not open the document because the parser module cannot parse the file." Does anyone know what this means? I could not find ‘parse’ in the help file.

BBBS,

Does anyone know what this means? <<

Yep, it means Photoshop couldn’t understand the structure of the EPS file. When Photoshop opens a non-Photoshop EPS file, it has to rasterize the vector content of that file. Parsing is part of that process, the part that actually reads the instructions within the EPS (such as moveto x-121 y=345) and determines what that means in terms of creating the rasterized image.

EPS stands for Encapsulated PostScript File and Adobe owns PostScript. Adobe provide very detailed specification for PostScript and EPS files, set out in the "Red Book" (the PostScript Language Reference)

However there are thousands of flavours of EPS (not all red-book compliant), because there are thousands of applications that can create EPS files. There’s no guarantee that Photoshop will be able to open every EPS file, by any means
