Adding Hexagonal Grid Overlay to Photoshop

I’m trying to add a colored hexagonal grid to a .tif map in Photoshop. I cannot figure out how to do it either with layers or properties or pattern makers. Can anyone give me some (detailed) suggestions? I need to be able to customize the hexes so they will correlate with mileage on the map. One hex equals one inch.

If you can envision a single tile of this pattern you want, make it in a 1"x1" file, with a transparent background, the same resolution as your map. Then select all, then edit>define pattern. Then in the larger image add a layer then Edit>fill>pattern.

I’d strongly suggest creating the hexagonal pattern as a Custom Shape.

This way, you’d have absolute control over the size while maintaining crisp edges.
