When I try and use the pen tool to cut out an object, the area is filled in with a colour, this hides the picture underneath.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for your help

You use the wrong pen modus. Read the manual or the Help files.

this question is asked WAY too often here….but i’ll answer it for you.

when you click on the pen tool….look up at the pen tool bar. To the left there are a couple of icons for you to chose….you want PATHS not Shape Layers to be selected.

dunno why photoshop defaults to this setting.

good luck and keep learning (and dont let the grumpy gills here deter you 🙂

Andy, after you choose the pen tool, look at the options bar on the left. There are three icons in a row, you want the one that makes a path and that is the middle one. The first one makes a mask.

Many thanks for your help, though this question may be asked many times, to me as a new user I don’t know that. And if we understood every thing in the manual what would be the point of posting here?
Before I posted my question I read through the group to see if any one else had posted it first and they never.

Thanks again to the people who give straight answers.
