Hello All,

I’m wondering if anyone could direct me to a good tutorial for creating realistic mountains in Photoshop. Thank you.

Mountains could be created by 3D engines, not Photoshop, but you can try to use the sam techniques as the rock texture ones, for example, to achieve a good result.

1. Use Difference Clouds effect 3 o 4 times
2. Use AutoLevels
3. Use Lighting effect with extreme settings in alpha channels parameters (use Red channel, or anyone)
4. Change the lights direction and amplitude
5. Render

etc

This produce a good stone or rocks texture, as well as lunar landscape, or whichever you want.

Try to duplicate any channel to a new alpha channel, and rotate 90 degrees before applying Lighting FX, and so.

Sounds like you could use Bryce. It’s a 3d modeler. You can save finished renders to psd. Check the Corel web site.

There are too many techniques for doing this to be discussed here but there are lots of tutorials on the internet such as:
http://www.epilogue.net/art/tech/ Just do a search for something like "painting mountains tutorial"
Even tutorials for oil paintings can be used in Photoshop. There are tons of good books on this subject.
I suggest using reference images and practice, practice, practice. If you want to take the lazy way out then use a 3d program such as Bryce.

Alternatively check out Bryce on eBay. You don’t really need a bang up to date version unless it is for pro use. Bryce is definitely the way to go for 3D rendering of landscapes.

If you want to do this seriously have a look at Terragen http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/

Terragen is free for personal use but there are similar programs that you have to pay for.

I’ve been playing with a program called Vue d’Esprit. I haven’t decided how good it is, but it seems a little easier to use than Bryce.
