I need to replace my CRT as it is dying. It is/was a Sony Multiscan 21" and I have loved it for many years. But I guess it’s time to get an LCD…..

I want 19" (I think -this would give me the same screen real estate as the 21" CRT), I know I want color temperature adjustment.

I would also like one that has a few different video
settings that can just be accessed with a button. For
example, my Sony has settings: "Professional" which is good for reading and scrolling black text on a white background, "standard" which is good for all purpose indoor room light and "dynamic" which I use for photo editing.

I have heard that Eizo might meet my needs but their
response times seem relatively slow and they are fairly expensive. I’ll spend it if I have too….

What monitors would you recommend that would come close to, or surpass, the Sony Multiscan CRTs for both photo editing and writing a book, surfing/reading web etc.

TIA

Louise

bhphotovideo.com has some nice 21" CRT monitors. I used a Sharp LCD for a short time, before a can of paint exploded on it, and I didn’t like it – it might have been just me though. Before the paint incident I could not bring myself to go back to CRT but now I find myself less defensive about going the LCD route.

Good luck,

Response times are not important for Photoshop use, they are for gaming.

Eizo, or LaCie, offer quality LCD displays (in their ‘Graphics’ series, although at a price). Samsung offers fast refresh times.

Are refresh times considered important for text – scrolling large documents? This is the other thing I do with a
monitor and I’m looking for something that will accomodate both.

Thanks again.

very definitely not Louise, unless you are busy with a exam and working by the second.

Actually, I’m not sure that’s correct Dave — Refresh rate is important to alleviate eye strain. That’s important to me when reading on screen.

I have seen the Samsung 931C quoted as being very good. It has a 2ms response time and looks pretty good:

I found it at NewEgg for $279 which is the lowest price I could find it ($259 after $20 mail in rebate). I will probably get me one sometime after the new year.
