Healing tool and patch work; no additional layers, opacity set to 100%. No selections are active. In 8-bit mode.
Am ‘picking up’ source (via Alt-Click) but when try to ‘paste’ by clicking on destination area nothing happens (including no ‘history’). Any ideas? Be most grateful.

Frustrated…

Healing brush and Patch tool are two different things, and work very differently as well, so what are you using? The patch tool doesn’t work the way you describe, so if you are using the patch tool, it’s no surprise it doesn’t do anything. The patch tool works as follows: Make a selection and move it to the place that should be patched (or where the patch comes from, depending on the settings).

Apologies for being unclear; the point I was trying to make was all other similar tools are working; just not the Clone tool. Without any selections, layers or anything else I can think of I cannot get clone to work.

I’ve been using for a year, am reasonablyfamiliar with the tools and processes.
But stumped as to ‘why’ no clone.
Nothing added or changed (to best of knowledge).

Interestingly there is a similar thread on Google "… I just can’t get the cloning tool in photoshop CS to work … " but the hosting site is down – http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=009KqR& amp;unified_p=1

Thus.. I remain frustrated

Hi Les

The only things that immediately springs to mind are:

is the layer active and selected (blue and eye)
is the layer protected (padlock) if so make a copy layer and work on the copy
source layer has to be active and selected when defining the source destination layer has to be selected and active before starting to clone in

Well, those sre the first things I would look at

I suppose secondary aspects are:
PSCS in Win/Mac?
image size?
file size?

I understand Adobe support is offered as part of the purchase

"Dear Adobe
This feature is preventing me from making effective use of my licence agreement … "

seems a good way to start

The first thing to try when Photoshop isn’t doing what it should is trash /reset preferences.

OK, I’ve read the thread, but still only guessing, as all the answers should work – unless we’ve all missed something.

Assuming that you have an image with two Layers – one is your image Layer ( could also be Background) and is the Layer you wish to Clone from, and one Layer is now blank, and is the Layer you wish to Clone to. In the Clone Tool Options bar, check the Use All Layers (actual wording might be different, as I don’t have PS open in front of me now). This allows the Clone Tool to pick up info from All Layers. Make sure that the Clone To Layer is active and Transparency is NOT Locked, and Alt-click the area you wish to Clone From – you should be able to see the Image Layer through the new, totally transparent Clone To Layer. Depending on your Preference settings for Cursors, you should have a cross-hair when you Alt-click, and then circle (if you selected Brush Size in Cursors). Now, Click-drag the circle and you should Clone To the selected transparent Layer.

If you have only one image Layer, and it is active and transparency is not Locked, you do not have to have Use All Layers checked, and you should just Alt-click to select the Clone From spot, then move the cursor and Click-drag to Clone To.

If you are using a tablet, check to see that all other Tools, such as Brushes, Marquee Tool, etc. work with it. If not, you might need to address a driver problem with the tablet.
