When I start Photoshop, I get various error messages saying my scratch disks are full. This happens when the program is starting up, and not while working on images(which I read is a more common problem).
Can anyone help me with this problem?

Tom,

Edit>Preferences>Plugins and Scratch.

Set the primary scratch drive to a drive with PLENTY of free space (depending upon the size of images you are working with of at least 2 gig).

If you only have one drive, make sure that you have at least 2 gigs free space on it.

You should check for *.tmp files on the drive and delete all you find.

The problem is that Photoshop shuts down after saying "Could not initialize Photoshop because scratch disks are full"!. So I can’t edit the prefs…

I have 5 gigs of free space on my scratchdisk?!…

I have resetted the prefs(alt, ctrl, shift at startup), and it still says the same "…initialize Photoshop etc"..?

I have resetted the prefs(alt, ctrl, shift at startup), <<

But did you get the d/box asking if you wished to delete your prefs file? If not, you weren’t quick enough.

Yes. I even found the physical file, and deleted it. Still same message…

I am also having the same problem with my Photoshop, except I have the one the comes with Creative Suite (version 8, I believe). I have tried the holding down alt-shift-ctrl while starting up Photoshop and then selecting ‘Yes’ when it asks me, "Delete the Photoshop Settings File?" I’ve tried renaming the file named "Adobe Photoshop CS Prefs.psp" in "C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\8.0\Adobe Photoshop CS Settings\" in hopes of it creating a new one when starting. I even renamed the whole "Photoshop" folder under "Application Data\Adobe\" to see if that would do anything. I’ve moved the Windows page file to various drives with various settings (setting it to Custom Size (both static and dynamic), System Managed Size, and even turning off the page file completely from all drives). I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled it various times and yet I still get an error. When I mess with the page file, I sometimes get a "Could not initialize Photoshop because the file could not be found" error instead of the scratch disk full initialization error. The error comes up when the splash screen says it’s "measuring memory." Like Sirpa says, I would change the scratch disk settings, but Photoshop closes after you click OK on the error message and you cannot do anything when the error message is up. Is there a way to change scratch disk settings without starting photoshop up, or is there some other reason we are getting this error? Does anyone know how to resolve this problem? I’ve tried all the other programs I installed with the Creative Suite and none of the other programs are having this problem. Photoshop also worked for a while until this error started coming up. There is nothing significant I can think of that changed between when photoshop was working and when it stopped (although something probably did happen or else I wouldn’t be having this problem). If it helps, the following is the specs of the computer:

Intel P4 3.2GHz 800Mhz FSB Processor
Abit IC7-MAX3 Motherboard with latest BIOS
2GB (4x512MB) PC4000 DDR RAM
2x WD Raptor 36GB 10,000RPM HDD (one is my C: drive where Windows XP Pro SP1 and Adobe Creative Suite is installed, and one is the D: drive which I use for scratch space)
1x WD 250GB 7200RPM HDD (for storage)
ATI 128MB Radeon 9800 Pro with latest drivers
Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS Platinum Pro with latest drivers

If anyone could suggest anything as to why this problem started occuring or how to resolve this, much would be appreciated. I would reformat and install everything over again, but I just did that recently and I would prefer it if I could resolve this problem without having to do it again. Thanks in advance.

P.S. Also, which FAQ is dave milbut speaking of? I just want to make sure I’ve read it (even though I’ve read most of the FAQs/knowledgebase articles I could find that seemed related to my problem). Also, what is "turn off autoquote on your newsreader" referring to?
