When you are in a program like Microsoft Word, and you pull down the font menu, or view it in a sub-menu, the fonts appear in their relative faces, making it much easier to choose which one you want. My co-workers and I are finding it very frustrating, that in Illustrator & Photoshop, they only appear in Ariel, and that you have to keep selecting them, just to get an idea of what the look like! EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING! We are using Illustrator 10.0.3 and Photoshop 7.0. We are computer friendly graphic designers, who are basically comfortable in these applications, but not IT wizards by any stretch of the imagination. (We do have one on staff, if it comes down to anything complicated.) Is there anything we can do–options we can select, or add ons we can download– to View Fonts in the Pull downs, Character Palette, and or Font Sub-menu in thier respective faces?

The only thing you can do is create the text, highlight it and then use the arrow keys to scroll through the fonts. This will change the font on the canvas.

FWIW, Illustator CS does allow you to see the font name in the font’s actual face.

If you do what Bob suggests, press ctrl + H (hide) before you scroll through the fronts to hide the selection. You’ll still see the fonts change but won’t have the inverse selection showing.

create some text, APPLY it. (Enter or check in the option bar). Then select the text layer and you can scroll the font list in the character palette.

That is a new one to me Dave, thanks. I think that is a little faster than the other method I have used.

Using a real font manager, like Bitstream Font Navigator or Typograf, is much easier still.

As Dave said.

No need to highlight the text in the image, and then to hide the highlighting.

I was so excited and relieved when discovered I didn’t have to jump through those hoops to experiment with text attributes.

Just highlight the Text layer in the Layers Palette, then experiment away.

Go to Moon Software and download their free utility: Font Xplorer Lite. I use it every day pick a font from a listing in each fonts face. http://www.moonsoftware.com/freeware.asp

I am not affiliated to Moon Software but have used many of their excellent programs for several years.

Thanks everyone for this forum.
