I have some 600 x 400 jpeg pictures that I want to use for a keyfob, When I reduce the size down to 4 x 3 cms (the size of keyring insert) I am losing the sharpness and they are looking like out of focus. Am i doing something wrong or is this normal.

I am using `image size` in photoshop to reduce them.

Any help appreciated, but keep it simple as I am not too familiar with photoshop.

"Best Way"? if you only want "The Best" then I am afraid I have never seen "The Best" to share with you. But if you just need a normal way,

– If you want to keep the IQ (Image Quality) or 100% crop then you should use CROP TOOL then crop to Radio Aspect.

600×400 = 3×2 ratio aspect
4 x3cms = 4×3 ratio aspect

– If you want to change the Ratio Aspect to 4×3 then

1. Select Crop Tool

2. Type in [4] & [3] in the BOXes on the Menu (it pops up when you select CROP

3. Then use your mouse/pen to select the area you want to crop. This will give you the best IQ the image can give you.

– *If* you want to STRETCH the 3×2 ratio to fit 4×3 then you can use the "Image Resize" then save as HIGHEST. This may give you some waco look but that’s what you want.

You can of course not alter the proportions of a photo and expect it to be still in focus.
Keep the tick in ‘Constrain Proportions’
and alter either only the Width or Height.
Doing this will show what the new size should be and work from there. Maybe it should be necessary to alter the canvas proportions but doing it this way will lead you to keep it proportional.

Use the crop tool set to 4cm x 3cm and leave the resolution blank.

This should retain sharpness.

When you use Image Size, do you have "resample image" turned on or off? What is the resolution of the images at 600 pixels by 400 pixels?

If you want to reduce the print size but keep the same number of pixels, turn OFF "resample image."

As others have said, you cannot resize a 600×400 pixel image to be 4×3 cms. The aspect ratio limits you to an image which is 1.5 times as long as it is wide.
If you are determined to create that portion of the image which will fit 4×3 cms, then your only choice is the crop tool.
