Contrast adjust unsticks

Here we have a black-and-white (grayscale) tif image
and I do a contrast adjust to darken up the type.
The contrast/brightness dialog box is open to do this.
When I click ok, the box closes and the contrast shifts
back to the way it was.

What am I doing wrong ? How do I make the contrast
adjust stick ?

If it wasn’t obvious, I’m a relative newbie to PShop.
Don’t know what the history palette is or where
to find it. If the adjusted tif is in there somewhere,
how to I save it to overwrite the original file ?

How do you flatten a tif and why should you ?

I think it would help if you could post a screen grab of your layers palette. You may have to download some screen capturing software to do this then subscribe to a site that will host your image but having the ability to do that one thing will help a lot for getting help while you’re in the process of learning the basics of Photoshop. I know how aggravating this can all be but hang in there hang in there and keep reading and you get through it.
Btw, I have to get a lot of help too so I use ‘Fastone’ [http:// www.faststone.org/FSCapturerDownload.htm] capturing software and place my images at [http://picasaweb.google.com/home].

Why are you using the Tiff format? Could it be that the image is "write protected"?
