Hi

I’m making a logo to get printed out onto card in a printshop & am struggling over something basic.

Created the logo & text in Illustrator, scaled without affecting the ‘crispness’ and saved as .ai. Opened it up in PS and saved as .psd for him to print (he hasn’t got Illustrator on his machine). He wants it as 300 dpi but when I opened it up in PS, the ‘Rasterize Generic PDF Format’ box had a resolution of 70 by default. I changd it to 300 and the image grew too!

The ‘New Doc Preset Res.’ box in the preferences section is showing that the screen resolution is 72 pixels/inch and the print is 300 pixels/inch.

All i want to do is get my image with text from Illustrator to PS and save it at a high resolution – any help is greatly appreciated,

Andy

The display on screen is big but if you go to Image>Image Size you will find that the print size is correct. View it at 25% in PS to see the whole thing. Also……what kind of print shop doesn’t have Illustrator?

What you should do is Save as an Adobe PDF and either embed the fonts, or convert the fonts to a vector shape and then select "Include Vector Data." in the Save as PDF panel that comes up. An EPS directly from Illustrator may work too.

A print shop that doesn’t have Illustrator? What the heck do they use?

Peadge 🙂

Like the others said: Go somewhere else. That shop doesn’t deserve your business. Not having Illustrator in this day is like not having ink to put on the press.
The other option is save as EPS.

Thanks for your assistance. Got the images done without too much grief, but your right, it’s odd that a printshop doesn’t have Illustrator. He seems to do everything in PS & Quark. Nevertheless, thanks for your input

Sadly, your experience is not an unusual state of affairs. Especially when dealing with small printers – or large chains/franchises. The owners often don’t have a clue, and hire staff at dirt wages that know even less. Keith.

My sediments exactly find a real printer, for there is no real printer without Illustrator.

If he has Quark then you could indeed save time and save the Illy file as an EPS (probably with the text outlined). The printer can just place it in XPress (according to your instructions, or do it yourself) and RIP it. If he does not have Illustrator, I doubt if he can handle a PDF;)
