I have been having a problem saving images in CS. This has never occured before. I save in the PSD format but the icon next to the saved file is not a PSD icon but a generic one. When I rt click and then assess its properties it says "file". Double clicking on it to open the file says "could not open the file because it is not the right kind of document". If I open the identical file under "open recent" it opens correctly.
Any Suggestions?

Sounds like PSD no longer associated with Photoshop (or anything else).

Quickest way is to right click on psd file/open with/photoshop/"always use this program …"

That might not change the icon. If you need to do that use Folder Options/File Types dialogue.

thanks for the rapid reply. Unfortunately using rt click, open with photoshop cs continues to yield the same error message. Cannot open this document type. Any other suggestions?

Try reinstalling PS over itself. This only takes a couple of minutes and might fix any problems with the registry. If not, try uninstalling and reinstalling which will only take a few minutes longer. I doubt that the usual first step when anything goes wrong of deleting prefs would work here but it might be worth doing anyway. If none of this works then you have various fix Windows options up to a full reinstall of the OS.
