Folks:

I’ve got a 300 DPI scan of old map (circa 1928) from a map library that I would like to decompose to layers that I can turn on and off individually for clarity. For example, I’d like to extract the contour lines.

Do any special methods apply? Anyone know of relevant write-ups or tips?

Thanks,

Henry

FWIW:
Maps are usually drawn in a vector illustration program … such as Corel Draw or Adobe Illustrator … *not* in an image editing program such as Adobe PhotoShop.

You will probably have **much** better luck if you ask that question in one of the forums dedicated to those program(s), and if you use that kind of program for your re-drawing of the map in question.

How big is the map? Is the map in color or B&W and how detailed is it? How many levels are you looking toward

Allowing that it is B&W there are a number of tricks that can be used. A favorite is to blur and then squeeze the levels. Blurring fills out rough spots and squeezing the levels brings back a sharp image.

Let us know the answers and we’ll try to help
