Save problems between PS and ImageReady

Hello all,

Just so I don’t forget to mention it later—-I’m using PS 7.0 on a PC running WinXP.

Here’s a problem I’ve had more than once, and this time it’s a real pain. I’m designing a portion of a web page in PS…I create all the slices in PS, then jump over to Image Ready to do the rollovers, optimizing, etc. I’ve opened the file, worked on it, and jumped back and forth to Image Ready a number of times, and I save it each time with the usual CTRL+S when I’m done. Now suddenly when I try to open it, I get the following message:

"Could not open …because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop."

Of course I created the file in "this version of Photoshop," and I’ve opened it several times before. Now it simply will not open, period. Has anyone else had this problem, and/or know of a way to get it opened so I can keep working on it? I have another copy saved elsewhere, so it’s not the end of the world if the file is lost, but the other copy doesn’t have the slices, etc., in it ….plus I’d like to avoid this in the future if possible.

Incidentally, I’ve also gotten this message in the past with .gifs and .jpgs that weren’t created on my machine…with those I’ve found if I open them in anything else (even MS Paint works) and then save them, PS will open them. So I’m assuming this is a PS problem and not, say, a Windows thing or a problem with the file itself. The problem is the only thing I have to open ..PSD files is, of course, Photoshop, so I can’t use the above trick.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Michael

You know the old joke about the person in a car asking for directions and the local yokel replying "well, I wouldn’t start from here?". It applies. If you’re designing a web site (as opposed to just making images to go on that web site, you really should think about using suitable software such as Dreamweaver.

Thanks for the tip, but that’s exactly what I’m doing. Like many people, I do the graphic work in Photoshop, then use slices to save individual images. I use ImageReady for optimizing the slices as .gifs or .jpegs and for doing rollover effects—I find it’s easier and more accurate to do the layer-based rollovers and export them than it is to create to separate images and code them in Dreamweaver. I don’t generally save the design as a full web page from ImageReady–unless it’s a very simple one. I just save all the optimized images and then build the actual page in Dreamweaver.

Anyway, the problem I was describing in my original post didn’t really have anything to do with what I using Photoshop for. What I meant was, I sometimes (and always at the worst possible times) get an error message from Photoshop when I try to open a file—"Could not open …because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop." It’s happened when I save a ..psd file, then go to open it next time.
Actually, I realize now that it’s not just a problem between PS and Image Ready. It HAS happened when I jump over to Image Ready (using the little icon at the bottom of the Photoshop toolbar), and then try to save from ImageReady. But it’s also happened when someone gives me, say, a .jpeg that I want to open in Photoshop. I’ll get the same message, even though every other program I have that reads .jpegs will open it.

I assume this is probably a glitch in the software, as opposed to say, some setting in the Preferences. I haven’t bothered with a re-install because it’s not that big a problem, just an annoyance. My main reason for posting wasn’t so much to find a solution (though a solution would be great), but to see if anyone has had a similar problem and has found a way to open the files that PS says it can’t open.

Thanks,
Michael

OK, well another major problem, from my POV anyway, is the use of Image Ready. If it was a horse they would have shot it by now. You’re far better off doing the image work in PS and then moving to Fireworks, which does the web stuff correctly and integrates well with DW.

Sounds like IR is f**king things up. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

The solution is to use Fireworks 😉
