Hi

I know how to stroke text in photshop using a coulour, but I’m sure I’ve managed to do this before using 2 or more colours…so you get a few layers of stroke on the outside?

The above image shows the Wotsits logo stroked 3 times, red, blue then white.

Can we do this in Photoshop 7?

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Rasterize the text on a transparent layer then select the text.

Now you can apply a stroke to the selection.

Repeat this as many times as you like each time using a new colour.

Hope this helps.

I’d be willing to bet that the package art was done in a vector program. But having said that, if you wanted to get that effect in PS what you might try is duplicate your stroked text layer a few times and use a larger and larger stroke as you descend through the layers. Change the color for each stroke too.

Thanks guys,

I’ve also figured out if you apply an outer glow and a stroke, you can make it so they look like 2 x strokes, but for more, I’ll go with the above tips!

Logos should always be created in vector programs. In Illustrator, creating multiple strokes like that is a no-brainer.

Add the stroke of your choice and then create a new blank layer. Link this empty layer with the one with the stroked text. Press CTRL+E to merge the two together and apply another stroke. Repeat as necessary.

This is a cool method. One completely surprising to me. Is this buried somewhere in the Help? The only problem I see is that it does not allow for being able to alter things later.

no, no, no!!
(lots of interesting suggestions, but it is actually much simpler)

here is what you are looking for – when you add the stroke, instead of "color", choose "gradient"
make sure you have "shape burst" selected for the gradient type.

in the gradient editor (click the gradient just like you would a color) if you slide the 2 color sliders to 50%, you get 2 distinct colors. then play with stroke size (in pixels), adding colors, and use "reverse" or inside/outside/center, etc to change it around.

try it, you will like it!
