I need to create something like the apple teaser in this link: http://images.appleinsider.com/apple-wwdc-teaser-070508.gif

If I want to create that "beaming effect" we see emitting from the object and goes out to the universe, is there any handy effect in the application that I can use? What’s your suggestion on creating an effect like this?

without trying I could suggest 3 ideas

star brushes> make a large yellow color brush
on layer over the stars
use outer glow effect if you want more soft edged

diamond gradient layer over the star layer- yellow to transparent

RENDER lighting effects on a dupe layer of stars

Not very good (not realistic) but on the right track. The creator just need to learn to take advantage of the combination of Opacity and Masking command.
