I finally have a new project but it’s a rush job. I have to do a full-color bleed folder, 300dpi. I need to create a background and some art effects. I want the background to sort of
emmulate a fiber type paper stock with gradient. First,
which would be best for this, Illustrator9 or Photoshop6, for print quality? Should I create the background in PS and export as Illy to do the rest there? My other real problem is hard disk space. I’ve been on such a tight (nonexistent) budget for so long that I’m ill equipped. When I started to create the bg in PS I either got "scratch disk is full" or "can’t save because the disk is full". I’ve been compressing files since I have no way to store them. So, I need to create the smallest file I can and still be good for high res output. AND, I have to have finish for sometime tomorrow morning. I need this gig to go well. It will pay for upgrades and there is more where it came from.

DESPERATELY YOURS,
inez

I think one option would be to purchase a new harddrive, against the money you are going to receive for this project. You can’t do the job if you don’t have the tools, right?

But if that’s really not possible, and you’re on Win2K or XP, I’ve found one location for temp files that is hiddne by default, and can accumulate hundreds of MB or more of files over time that are not deleted regularly.

Be sure that you are viewing hidden files in Windows Explorer, and go to C:/Documents and Settings/[your login account]/Local Settings/Temp. Delete anything there that is not from today, and repeat for any other login accounts on your machine.

When I first discovered this location I went around to all the PC workstations in the department and cleared an average of 700MB off of each one.

Perhaps this will give you the wiggle room you need to get this project finished – then go out and get some more storage space!

Yes. Do the image in Photoshop, and place it in Illustrator (or better yet, a page layout program like QuarkXPress) for the type and other elements.

Sounds like you desperately need another hard drive. They run about $60 or so; it’s money well-spent.

"Small file" and "high-res output" don’t go together. It’s about like saying "I
need a hip flask that can fit in my shirt pocket, but it has to hold five gallons of water." Ain’t gonna happen.
