I’ve been loading RAW NEF files into PS CS since Nikon first made their format available (10/13/2003).

This morning the browser could not display the preview of the RAW images and I received the error message,
"Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document."

I tried several different sources (current hard disk folders, camera CF memory and previous files archived on CD-ROM.
PS could not display the preview nor load any of the NEF files..

PS Elelments 3.0 previews and loads the same files OK.

Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Thanks! . . . patrick

What operating system are you using Patrick? If you are using Win XP, do a system restore to a couple of days back when all was working well. That might put everything back to normal.

Brian.

Yers, I’m using Win XP Home Edition
I’ll try a system restore — but without much enthusiam ;>)

BTW, I removed Elements 3.0, suspecting that there might be a conflict between the two programs. No luck there!

Thanks for the response! . . . . patrick

That did not work. Same behavior — misbehaviour!

BTW, how does one save a copy of the preference file? I could not find a "Preferences" or "Prefs" in WE. I would prefer to create a copy of the working preferences,(using an altered file name) which could be used to restore *my* preferences rather than the default preferences.

Thanks for the suggestion. Any other ideas?

Brian: I didn’t mean to dismiss your suggestion. I’m away from my computer for a couple of days but will run a restore when I get back. Another recourse I have is to copy the NEF RAW plug-in from my other desktop in the hopes that that file is corrupted.
I’m not sure at this point but I vaguely recall that we had a power outage while PS CS was running and the faulty exit from the program may be the culprit.

I always read and appreaciate the postings from yourself and Hecate.

Thanks again! . . . . patrick

Back it up with your normal back up routine. You do have one, don’t you? 😉

You haven’t, by any chance, got the Nikon 8bf files in your PS folder have you?

Of course, I have a rigorous back-up routine (somewhere)! Last time I saw it, it was in that folder with my Living Will, Limited Power of Attorney, and Google results for a search on health club programs. At age 76 I only buy ripe bananas and no longer debug machine code to determine what’s going on behind the scenes. Didn’t I comment on deja vu in my last post?

No, Hecate, there are two in the plug-in folder: Camera Raw.8bf and Camera Raw.8bx.
In the Programs>Adobe>PS root directory is a file, Camera Raw.8bi No citation of Nikon*.8b* in any of the PS folders.
I have *no* idea what’s being invoked.
Do I detect an ominous foreboding in the query?

Thanks again for the response and all your contributions to the community! ! . . . . patrick

OK, Brian! As I mentioned, I’m away from my home computer for a bit but will try the System Reset tomorrow.
If that fails, I’ll reinstall the Nikon RAW plug-in download and, finally, reinstall the entire PS CS.

Rats! Just when I was beginning to get a feeling for RAW! cu . . . . patrick
