I have a Samsung Syncmaster 1100p CRT monitor, which I have been using for some time since new, but I now thinking of getting a new monitor. I wondered what (if any) LCD monitors could do the job right.

I live in the UK and was thinking of spending between

Thanks for the reply Clive.

But what about the colour calibration.

Any help and advice would be great.

I don’t know whether that’s VAT inclusive or not, but you should really look at Eizo as they are excellent quality with superb colour rendition i.e. accurate, which is more than you can say for most LCDs.

For 439 ex VAT (516 inc) you can get the FlexScan L768, a 19" TFT, (which, btw, has a 5 year warranty from Eizo). See
www.nativedigital.co.uk

If you can stretch the budget a bit further to 719.99 ex VAT (845.99 inc) you can get the 20.1" FlexScan L887 with a 20.1", the warranty et6c. If you can afford this one you should go for it – the quality is absolutely stunning and it has an incredible amount of control over the colour settings. This one’s available from Misco at: http://tinyurl.com/8t5qc

My CRT was on it’s last leg, so I needed a new monitor, and since the LCD prices are lower,
and the client’s deposit on a new project covered the cost, I went for it.

I just got a Viewsonic VP201s- a 20" LCD after considerable research. My primary
concern was the *true* viewing angles, or color shifting when the monitor is tilted.
Secondary were manuverability (ergonomically friendly) and other various features.
(Note: The pivoting screen feature on a lot of LCD monitors does not work in OS X.)

By actually viewing them in stores, tilting & leaning I decided on the VP201s becasuse
it displayed the least if any color sifting at extreme angles, and Viewsonic’s reputaion for use
in graphics . I found almost all 17", and most of the 19" LCDs displayed noticable shifting.
Thus the extra, albeit painful, $400.

Now comes the calibration. OSX Colorsync doesnt seem to be cutting it, and I have
tried SuperCal. But I’m still not convinced I have it calibrated properly.

I was considering purchasing PowerRipX for postscript emulation and proof quality output from
my Epson 1520, but now I am thinking I need to getting this LCD colorimeter and print calibration bundle instead
(http://www.publishingperfection.com/colorvision/clv145/).

Ooops- I just read the rest of your post- sorry- I’m in California. Hope this helps anyway.

Take a look at

It’s in your price range and Samsungs are among the very best LCDs. Here’s a review http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=1974&p=11
