When using Photoshop 7 (and 7.0.1) on a Windows NT 4.0 SP6a PC I have a very annyoing and reproducable bug on at least two workstations.
What happens is this:
Open one image in Photoshop.
File -> Save As -> pick a location, set file type to .TGA enter the name of a unique file -> Click on Save
Photoshop then asks how many bits per pixel etc. Select the options you want and click on OK. The file saves OK.
Open another file (and don’t close the first one) and go through the above procedure. Upon hitting Save Photoshop then tells me that "Could not save a copy as C:\…Filename.tga because that document is currently open. Save using a different name or close the document and try again"

Now, the problem doesn’t only happen with the TGA filter, it seems to be anything that’s not .PSD. The issue doesn’t occur when there is only one document open, and no matter how many documents I’ve got open, I can always Save As on the first document I opened.
I can verify that the file I’m saving as doesn’t already exist, so no other program could have it open. I’ve also disabled the AntiVirus software.

I have, however, tried this on another workstation running Windows 2000 Pro and the problem doesn’t rear it’s ugly head.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Kai

Kai,

This has been an ongoing issue. Adobe is aware of it but cannot reproduce it. It occurs on all versions of windows, whether or not PC’s are on a network.

I myself have experienced it, but cannot faithfully reproduce it. A long, long, time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, someone suggested that the file handles weren’t being released by Windows. I don’t know if it’s true, but there’s another post in this forum called Problem Saving where a utility to release file handles was suggested.

I can’t even spell file handle, and can’t say one way or the other whether or not it will work.

Of most importance however, is this: Can you reproduce it faithfully? If so, I’m SURE Adobe wants to know more.

Peace,
Tony

Kai,

Don’t have anything really intelligent to share other than I experienced this problem for the first time yesterday when I had opened 5 or 6 digital photos from my camera via the usb port. When I tried to resize and save, I kept getting that same error message. I finally gave up.
I have Windows Professional. Also, I had just recently discovered the ability to open all photos at once, so I had not ever done that before.

Probably not concise enough info to help..

The best fix I know of, and the only one that has worked faithfully for me, is to only have one file open at a time. It’s a real pain in the butt, but it has worked for me since I got PS7.

I’ve had it happen with only one file open…and a scanned image at that! Never even been saved. For me, I make a duplicate of the image, close the original without saving, then the duplicate usually saves.

Tony, (YrbkMgr)

I can faitlfully reproduce this issue on at least two seperate PCs. It could, indeed, be a problem with file handles not being released, or even being reused for each open document in Photoshop, meaning that having one document open and it’s all OK, have more than one open and the second and subsequent documents all share the first document’s file handle so Photoshop thinks that the document is open.
The interesting thing is that I can save as a Photoshop PSD with no problems, it’s only when trying to save as a different format that uses a plugin that I’m seeing the problem.

Now, you mention that Adobe are aware of and can’t reproduce this problem – do you have any more details on who I should contact to raise their awareness, and see if I can assist in the troubleshooting process?

Thanks everyone for the many, varied and prompt replies – keep ’em coming!

Cheers,
kai

I’m not 100% sure Chris Cox is the guy to contact but if *I* were able to reproduce it, that’s who I’d send it to.

Hope you don’t mind Chris.

Several PCs in our office have experienced this problem. It seem most prevalent in jpg files, but also a problem with tiffs and eps format. I haven’t been able to reproduce it on command. The first file will save fine, then any subsequent files won’t save, even if a completely new name and location is chosen. It only occurs occasionally, but definately recurrs.

Ahh… yes, I understand Diane. Same thing here. Occurs more than once, but I cannot MAKE it happen. That’s what we need, and that’s why Adobe cannot TS it at present.

Heck, I thought there was some hope…

Tony

Well, I can reproduce this problem at will with my setup – it happens every time I have more than one image open.
If anyone from Adobe can hear me, I’m performing this troubleshooting on behalf of a major client (a large Australian Bank) who has quite a lot of money invested in their Adobe software, so I’m more than happy to assist with troubleshooting this process in any way =)

Kai,

You might want to drop Chris Cox a note and let him know the details so they can see if they can reproduce it.
