I am trying to make changes to psd files but they have no layers, they have been saved in the backround layer. I can put text on it but once I do I can’t erase it or change the color. Is there anyway around this? I’m using a trail version of CS, before than I used photoshop 6. Any suggestions?

Make sure image is in RGB or grayscale mode.

Text tool should automatically make new layer and stay editable.

If indexed color, it won’t.

Try duplicating the background and use that layer instead (you can delete the Background once you have duplicated it). As Mac says, entering text should create yet another layer and stay editable.

Thanks for MAc and Jake!

I have another problem. The reason I’m trying to edit these backrounds is to place them into a html editor (Dreamweaver MX). I was having a hard time creating the whole page on CS then sending to MX. Now I want to place my images from Photoshop into an MX table. Do I have to break piece by piece? (For example, TopBar, 1stleftbutton, sidebar, etc.) If so how? I really don’t want to create each image separatly, do I have to or can I break them down once I created My page in CS.

Thanks in advance for any support

A table cell will hold one or a hundred images, whatever.

It’s unclear what you are trying to do.

If you are slicing image then each part of the sliced image (which is a separate pic file) must of course go precisely in the appropriate table cell.

If you are not slicing, just drop whole image in where you want it, in table or not.

Although I have never mastered the art of slicing, I believe you’ll want to do this in ImageReady (a companion program that comes with Photoshop). An alternative in PSCS is ‘save for web’. Basically, you want the graphic to be as small in size as possible while retaining adequate quality. The larger the file, the longer it will take to download over the web. If you are going to use the background and slice it for menu options in MX, use ImageReady. If you just want the graphic to appear as a background, save for web.

As I said, I never quite mastered the art of slicing but hopefully this will get you started. I hope I didn’t confuse things further!

Ok, I tried what Mac and Jake said. I was able to make a dub, but I was still restricted from making edits. When I type over it the image window turns pink and it won’t let me make changes. Could it be anything else?

Oh yeah Mac, it was in the right color scale and 8bit.

Thanks again

So Mac, are you saying that each slice that I make on the page is separate pic file? If so can they be saved separate? I have noticed, from sample site templates I have downloaded, that all the images are saved separatly. Then they placed inside the table on MX.

I am somewhat familar with imageReady but I need to get over this hurdle. I guess it’s the cost of trying to teach yourself.

Thanks, any help would be appeciated.

If RGB image, then you are probably using Type Mask Tool, rather than normal Type Tool.

So Mac, are you saying that each slice that I make on the page is separate pic file?

Yes, if output correctly with Save For Web, all slices, HTML and images option.

I think slices are quite overrated myself. A nightmare to mess with in the code after the fact by hand, and over and over it’s been proven that download times for sliced images are at best minimally faster. Plus just looks like hell loading, IMHO.
