Hello, I am trying to start designing some of my own website templates and i am having some problems with a few of the common effects that I see on some of these templates. Take a look at this example <http://www.interspire.com/templates/view/134> see the blue box at the left and how it has a gradient applied but it starts at an angle in the corner I cant seem to get this to turn out right I can apply the gradient in the corner but I can never get it as close and tight in the corner as shown.

Also take a look at this example <http://www.interspire.com/templates/view/194> how is the best way to create those curves in the top and keep it smooth. Is the pen tool the best way to go or are there some better ways.

thanks for any help or if you know some good websites to look at. Matthew

Hi Matthew,

Your gradient question is simply a matter of playing with the gradient tool and dragging your gradient down at the angle you want, set your in and out colours and create your selection over the box. Then simply starting at the top right drag down and left only a short way and release to create the gradient. For further gradient options double click on the short gradient poreview bar and adjust the sliders to create any type of gradient you require.

your second question about curves is a matter of drawing them out with a pen tool, remebering to finish the shape, so i would draw the curve and go right around the bottom of the box, then by control clicking on the path in the layer window you can create a selection of the shape you drew and then on a new layer you can add gradient, or i would simply use a large feathered brush and within the selected area, just use a lighter colour to brush in the highlights.

hope this helps!!!!

RE: Can you tell me the most common way to create lines through backgrounds

The easiest way is to make a pattern and apply it with Edit>Fill.

If you want the effect to go through a picture, which is often done, fill a layer with the lines above the picture layer, and then change the blending mode to multiply or screen (or another mode … the pix determines which will look best).
