How do I use a rounded rectangle shape as a mask?

I tried creating a layer above my image, added a layer mask and then tried to fill it with the rectangle tool but I just get ANOTHER layer with a shape and a layer mask. And my original image is not masked by the rectangle.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Make sure your rounded rectangle tool is set to fill pixels and not shape layers and that you are working on the mask.

or use the path shape tool (the second tool) and then click on the path with the black arrow tool (just above the pen tool) and go to Layer>Create Vector Mask>Current Path.
