I’m sure this is a simple process but as a new user I’m having a bit of trouble trying to figure out how to add additional photos to new layers. I have several photos that I want to work with at the same time but with different opacities-superimposed on each other. Thanks for any suggestions.

copy from one (source) into another (target). a new layer is created automatically. make sure target image is in RGB mode (image> mode)

On the menu click Layer>New>Layer

To change the opacity of the active layer go to the layers palette and click on the arrow with the 100% next to it and change the opacity to your liking.

If the palette is not visible, on the menu click Window>Show Layers.

To make a layer active, click on the layer you want to make active in the layers palette.

I think that’s about it unless you are trying to do something other than that.
