Hi,
Occasionally I want to use the layer style as an effect but only on a certain part of the layer, not the rest. OFTEN…. the layer style acts with the layer below to achieve my effect.

EXAMPLE: I have picture of my clothes dryer. I want to make a sad face on it with a crumbly mouth. I duplicate the dryer image layer. I place a dark gray layer below this. I cut out a section on the dryer image layer that looks like a crumbly mouth and the dark shows thru. NOW… to get my crumbly lip effect, I apply a bevel emboss style to the dryer image layer.

ALTHOUGH this works FINE, the corners of the dryer image layer also has the bevel emboss effect, with I don’t want it on the whole layer, just the mouth cut out section.

Any ideas.. OR BETTER YET.. Point me to a tutorial

Thanks,

Create your layer style, then go to Layer>Layer Style>Create layer. This will release your Layer Styles to individual layers. Erase the style where you don’t want it to appear.

Remember this may not work well with certain styles so you will have to play around with it. (Works really well with drop shadows that you want to convert to cast shadows however.)

Or you may want to draw with the brush tools on a new layer you’ve created above the object and then apply layer styles to the drawn objects instead of punching holes to a grey background and then applying styles

go to blending options (double click layer or use right arrow on layer palette) and check "Layer Mask Hides Effects"
