If I use ctrl-alt-~ to select hilites from composite (or ctrl-click rgb composite in channels) then copy this to new layer; repeat, selecting inverse and copying to new layer. I would have thought when I turn off the ‘background’ layer I would still see everything, but I don’t.
What’s missing?

I get a similar effect using ‘select-color range’ and making a layer each for hilites, midtones, and shadows. Then turing-off background layer.

Could someone please enlighten me? Thanks.

With control alt + ~ you are selecting luminosity of the highlights. Usually these areas are transparent. You can darken the highlights by using the blending modes of multiply or if too dark darken on the layers palette.

Make sure when you are selecting the shadow luminosity by using control + alt + ~ + control + shift + I that you have returned to the ORIGINAL source layer that you used to select the highlights–otherwise you will not get shadow values. You seem to get a duplicate of the highlight layer, To lighten shadows use either screen or lighten blending modes.

No Scott Kelby refers to this technique as "The Claw" because of the positioning of the fingers when performing the short cuts!

thanks that inspired me.

I used levels on the the hilite and shadow channels to bring white down to 128 before loading them and creating the new layers. Now with background off I have a complete image.

Craw, not craw.

Don’t worry, Harron. Would you believe, not everyone missed it?

Very good.
