Slow load time – says "scanning for plug-ins"

Photoshop CS seems to be very slow at loading on my PC. I have a P4, 1.6GHz processor with 1Gig of RAM. I had version 6.0 and it took about 15 seconds or less to open. I fully deleted that, installed CS and now it takes about 1.5-2 minutes to open. For most of the time, it says "scanning for plug-ins." Then it goes into "building TWAIN." The plug-in part takes about 1 minute or more and then the TWAIN part takes another 20-30 seconds. Once the program is up and running, it’s fast and runs like normal – no issues so far. Waiting for it to load all the time is really annoying. I don’t like to have it open all the time becuase of the resources it consumes, so I like closing it when I’m not using it. Is there any way to make it load quick, like the older versions?

By the way, I have tried putting a "~" in front of the program folders in the plug-ins folder and that doesn’t do anything (I read about this in other posts).

Help please!

thanks.

Read the existing threads about this — and remove the AutoFX PhotoGraphic Edges files from your plugins folder (see AutoFX for an update to their software).

As for TWAIN – that’s looking for your scanner or cameras, which means you may have a scanner driver installed that isn’t too happy about a missing scanner.

thanks Chris. I have spent a lot of time reading the existing threads. This seems to be a common issue – i would think that a patch would be released by now.

anyway, after reading a thread yesterday i put a "~" in front of 2 folders:

/Plug-Ins/Import-Export
/Plug-Ins/Adobe Photoshop Only

That did the trick. I don’t need to use my scanner in photoshop, it has it’s own software that’s fine for me. So stopping the loading of Import-Export (the scanner) is no big deal. I would like to use the "automate" feature in photoshop, but I’d rather have it load normally. There’s something different about the "Adobe Photoshop Only" folder this time vs. the older versions that is causing it to hang. I went from a 1.5-2 minute start up time to about 10 seconds.

And I don’t have the AutoFX plug-in. I only installed from the CD, I’ve never bought or even used a plug-in. So that’s not the issue.

What patch? Adobe can’t repair OS APIs, and Adobe isn’t doing anything wrong in using them. (AutoFX is doing something wrong by installing files where we told them not to, and they promise that they’ll have a patch for it, one of these days)

You now know that one cause of the slowdown was a problem with your scanner driver (beyond Adobe’s control).

And you need to narrow down which plugin is causing the delay in the Photoshop Only folder…. (because none of them should be able to do that)

so you’re saying i should go through each actual plug-in file (not folder) and put a "~" in front of it and test the load time? I will do that. Also, i think it might be one of the files in the "automate" folder.

yes, scanners always slow things down. That’s not too big a deal for me. However, it does seem a little long compared to older versions.

thanks.

First, go through the folders inside that folder — to narrow it down.

Then work on each plugin.

No, scanners don’t always slow things down – the driver should answer immediately and cause no delay. But some drivers have bugs, and yours seems to be among them.

BTW – the scanner driver time (and launch time initialization) is no different than PS 7.

my scanner is actually part of my printer, it’s the new HP printer (2510) and actually their software isn’t very good and has caused issues across the board on my machine. I have most of them fixed. So this "slow down" with the scanner software isn’t a surprise to me.

i’ll play with the sub-folders and then each plug-in, i’ll keep you posted. thanks.

This is why I advise anyone to avoid HP like the plague. Apart from the fact that multifunction = multiproblem, I’ve never met anyone who liked HP software.

agree, the HP software is HORRIBLE. This is my first HP product. Actually, i like the hardware very much and the quality of the prints. It’s just that the software is really bad.

What do you mean that multifunction = multiproblem? Is that with all brands? I can still return the printer, it’s only been a week and a half. Thoughts??

The main disadvantage of a multifunction machine is that if one part goes down it can take the rest down. Also each part is normally a very compromised product compared to a standalone.

I just set up a Dell system for someone who had bought a package deal with a MF device. The printer ran out of ink after a week and the Cartridges cost £63 a pair! No alternatives from Dell but I found it’s actually a Lexmark.

Happy days!

John
