I have an ongoing problem that I’ve been unable to solve. Time and again, my windows (such as Layers, Character, etc.) freeze on the screen and are unable to be dragged. The only way to solve the problem is to use the move tool and use it to move an item on the screen. After that, the windows are draggable. Soon after, they are frozen again and I have to repeat the whole process. Needless to say, this is maddening and I shouldn’t have to go through this. I’ve tried deleting the preferences file in order to reset it, but this does nothing to help me. Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?

BTW, I’m currently using the trial version. This shouldn’t matter, I think (in fact, I would think that the trial version would be as bug free as possible in order to get one to buy it!).

Thanks,
Aaron

Reset prefs.

See the first post…I tried that already, and it does nothing to fix the problem. I just did it again by holding down Alt-Control-Shift when starting the program, and upon resetting the preferences, my windows are still all frozen. Any other ideas?

Might be a video problem. Try turning hardware acceleration down to zero. If that does fix it, turn it back up and find an updated driver.

I tried turning down the hardware accelerator, but to no avail. I shouldn’t need a new driver, as I just downloaded and installed the most current one the other day.

Tell me, anyone…my processor’s been running somewhat hot (60 deg C for a P4). It’s caused (I’m guessing) my computer to shut down a couple of times recently. Is it possible that this could be causing my freezing problems too?

Thanks,
Aaron

definately. get a fan or fans! quickly before you really fry something (if you haven’t already)!

New drivers have been known to cause problem. I’d try reinstalling the old one.

Well, put a new CPU fan in, and everything is running much better…except Photoshop. The windows are still undraggable most of the time, even after resetting preferences. I went ahead and reformatted again and reinstalled Photoshop, thinking that maybe last time the install was corrupted somehow, but I’m getting the same behavior even now. I don’t know what to do…I NEED to use Photoshop for the web site I’m working on.

BTW, is it possible that this could be some strange memory problem? If so, why is it only affecting Photoshop?

Thanks,
Aaron

One more thing…

When I reformatted this last time, I installed the original drivers that came with my video card, an ATI All-in-Wonder 9700, not the updated drivers as per before. No difference – same problem.

Aaron

i’m running catalyst 4.7 with my ati aiw 9700 pro.

maybe we’re having a terminology block here. what do you mean "undragable"? you mean you click the title bar of a window and it won’t move? is it possible you have a mouse problem? please start from the top and be as detailed as possible. if you have some web space, even a free web site like geocities or tripod will do, try to use some screen shots to describe what’s going on and link to them here. a picture is sometimes worth a (lot of) words! 🙂

Okay, I’ve posted some pictures describing my dilemma. They can be viewed at <http://www.aaron-chandler.com/photoshopfix/unmovable.html>.

that’s odd. but the app otherwise keeps working?

do you have anything like a plugin manager installed? dual monitors with multi-monitor sw installed? (ati hydravision?) can you restart in safe mode and run cs? if so, can you then move them around?

i’m thinking something is interfering with your program or windows.

(did you check the mouse like i asked? anything there? what kind of mouse?) wacom or other tablet installed? everything off the tablet when using mouse?

i’m just brainstorming here. certainly is odd.

Well, I tried it in safe mode with no luck. Also, I tried lowering the graphics card acceleration to zero, and this made no difference.

My mouse should be okay…everything else is easily repositioned. I’m using an IBM Optical Navigator mouse, btw. Also, there are no plug-managers installed that I know of, and no dual monitors.

I’m running out of ideas…this sure is strange, huh?

Thanks,
Aaron
