When setting the Windows explorer view to thumbnails, there are no thumbnails generated for PSD-files.

I know it’s possible to add this function but can’t remember or find how to do.

It must be possible because before it was OK (before format of my drive).

Can someone help me please?

Windows XP

Thanks in advance.

unless you want your XP to come to a complete CRAWL – leave this disabled.

Do all of the following:
* in Windows Explorer, associate Photoshop with the .psd extension * in Photoshop, put a check mark in the box for Thumbnail in the Save As dialog
* use the Thumbnails view in Windows Explorer

What version of Photoshop?
Photoshop CS no longer provides thumbnail icons of .psd files

I frequently view thumbnails for .psd files in Windows Explorer (without caching) and have never as a result had XP "come to a complete CRAWL". It may take a minute or so to generate all the thumbnails in a large folder, but XP remains normally functional during this time.

Perhaps you have associated Photoshop with JPEG files. Performance problems have been reported with that association.

Same here. I even re-added my old psicon.dll to my C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell folder to get the thumbnails back in Explorer. I realize Adobe wants us to use the browser, but there are (many) times when I simply don’t want Photoshop running but still want to see my images.

Does this work with Photoshop CS?

Is there something else to change? registry …

Yup. I hate it when companies decide what’s best for me. 😉

I just added the dll to the Shell folder and the thumbs came up in Explorer as of old… you may have to rescan the folder or delete the thumbs.db files.

Thanks for your information … now I found the solution … and it works ….

I think it works for you because you installed a previous version of photoshop before and the registry settings are already created.

I Installed on a new PC without previous version of Photoshop and the neccessary registry settings are missing.

So, I copied the psicon.dll in the correct directory like you explained and I created a reg-key with next information, after importing the reg-key and a reboot, it works fine :

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio n\SharedDLLs] "C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Adobe\\Shell\\psicon.dll"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.psd\ShellEx]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.psd\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C 04FC2D6C1}] @="{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B4D}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B 4D}] @="Photoshop Icon Handler"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B 4D}\InProcServer 32]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Adobe\\Shell\\psicon.dll" "ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

I found the solution …

Three simple things to do …

1) Photoshop CS => Edit => Preferences => File Handling => Maximize PSD File Compatibility => Always
(this will generate the composite image for layered Photoshop files)

2) Copy psicon.dll from a previous version of Photoshop to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell
(if it does not already exist)

3) Create a reg-file and import this into the registry and reboot

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio n\SharedDLLs] "C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Adobe\\Shell\\psicon.dll"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.psd\ShellEx]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B 4D}] @="Photoshop Icon Handler"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B 4D}\InProcServer32] @="C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Adobe\\Shell\\psicon.dll" "ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

And thanks for sharing. 🙂
Sooner or later I’ll uninstall Photoshop 7 and when that happens, I’ll probably use your solution to get the thumbs back.
