I did a search on sharpening to learn more on doing the sharpening and I found many different techniques. I am now even more confused than before. Could someone tell me the best way to sharpen a portrait of a family member that is just shot by a novice as a snap shot and now I want to make a 8 by 10 photo out of it for the family members. In other words it isn’t done by a professional so maybe doesn’t need to end of being of equal quality.

Choices are:
Surface Blur
Gaussian Blur layer techniques with luminosity and 50% opacity and merge visible
Gaussian Blur on the background layer

Thanks

There is no Best Way for everything, but using whatever best for whatever you work on.

Me, I rarely use sharpen, and if I do I never sharpen the whole image (I work mostly on portrait of people *not* landscape or animal), and as a professional photographer I use top_of_the_line lens to capture the good IQ so I sometime have to add some soften (usually on female) instead sharpen

There should be no specific choice of command but choice of technique’s or style you know well, and use whatever work best on specific image. This may give you a good start (?).

– Trying to control your camera to capture the sharp image so you don’t need to use software to sharpen the image

– You may want to invest your money and time on a tablet which usually a good Photo Retouching parter. Tablet works pretty similar to mouse, but it may take weeks or months to master it (keep using it until you can use tablet 100% then you will start benefit from the handy pen).

– I assume that you have viewed some video tutorials (?), I would suggest to adapt the technique’s used on the video to other. IOW, you should watch the video to get the general idea not to any specific.

Example, I often mention LAYER and MASK etc. and you can use the combination of Layer and Mask on sooooo many things (including the one you mention above).

Thanks
