I am just starting to learn Photoshop CS3. IN earlier photoshop versions, it was no problem to open an image and edit it with eyedropper and brush tool. Now I have this new CS3. I open any tiff or jpg image. cannot draw with brush tool. I notice it is the background image, and it shows it is locked. All options are grayed out, so cannot unlock! So I copied the image to a new Image1. It is not locked, no lock icon is shown. Try the same thing again , but brush tool does not work. So CS3 is not letting me edit an image whether locked or unlocked. How do I get it to work?

First thing to do is check the Brush settings in the Options Bar. Is Opacity set to 100? Is the Mode Normal?

If everything checks out, consider trashing/resetting Preferences. How to is in the Help file.

I don’t have it, but from what I’ve heard lots of things in CS3 are broken.

All preferences/options are at default. The opacity is set for 100%. Nothing will modify the image…including blur/smudge tools…no matter what type of image I load. It will however, let me make color/contrast adjustments to the whole pic.

Here’s what I meant by resetting Preferences:

To restore all preferences to their default settings:

Do one of the following:
* Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or
Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) immediately after launching Photoshop or ImageReady. You will be prompted to delete the current settings. * In Mac OS, open the Preferences folder in the Library folder, and drag the Adobe Photoshop CS Settings folder to the Trash.

New Preferences files will be created the next time you start Photoshop or ImageReady.

Try that and see if it helps.

Click two times on the background layer and change the name on Layer0. After that you can do everything.

make sure you are not in 16 bits, many options are greyed out under that mode
