I’m looking for some good software that would allow me to index some 3000+ digital photos I have. I thought that if there was something with a relational database that would allow me to search by multiple categories that that would be really great.

Ideally, I’d like to take a photo of say me water skiing and be able to assign key words to it:

"MY_NAME WATER SKIING MICHIGAN SPORT", so be able to sign a bunch of user defined words, as opposed to a single category like I’ve seen some software support.

And, then if I want to do a search for all items containing "MY_NAME and SKIING" that it would come up along with all other photos matching that spec.

I’ve seen some software that seems to allow for searching by data and a single category, but nothing along these lines.

Do any of you have experience with this?

Forgive the shot from left field, but as a database person let me say you don’t need a "relational database", whatever the hype mavens are calling just about any data or file system today.

Look into Adobe Photo Album, or _any_ picture filing system that uses a broad search engine. Start surfing.

Extensis Portfolio is another one with a lot of capabilities, it can even do digital watermarking so you can keep track of your pictures if you ever put them on the net.

Whatever you’ve got, make sure there is some way to get your pictures out with standard software, if the software decides not to work any more.

Scott,

Why not just make your own database? That way you can design it anyway you want and won’t be locked in to someone elses way of storing pictures. I found that Lotus Approach is one of the most powerful, SIMPLE databases to use. You can buy Lotus Smartsuite online for about twenty bucks. Just load Approach as MS Word and Excel are hard to beat.

Approach has a template ready to go but it is so easy to edit and change it, adding all of the fields you want including a thumbnail of every picture. I admit Access is wonderful, but it is a difficult program to learn. Many prepared photo datbases are good too, but you want to customize it for your way of working. Approach makes it easy.

I was the IT at a local school for years. Few people ever mastered Access even though it was on everyone’s computer. Lotus is one of the best kept secrets. Most people were making there own databases after a couple of weeks and we wrote many for the entire school. I keep all of my slides and negs in an approach database. I love it.

My 2 cents.

Do you suppose FIle Maker Pro would allow the same thing? I just want to insert a CD with graphics, have a program generate thumbnails automatically, and put them into a database, with keywords, titles, captions, dates, etc. automatically filled in.

I have File Maker Pro, but I don’t know how to do the automatic thumbnail thing with it.

I agree with you about Access. I simply hate it.

The problem may be duplication of IPTC EXIF and keywords

A smart, really smart database will pic up EXIF and IPTC and maybe just maybe append it to the thumbnail

And -hey- thumbnail I’d be happy with an 800 by whatever at 46K if I can move the 2M file to CD

So, theres the rub – how to do it smartly Aertly smartly

Pepe – this is beginning to look good!

A couple of questions spring to mind after having a look at the website and they are
what is the resample algorithm
what size (or options) for offline images
how extensive is EXIF & IPTC data

At 489 Euros for the pro version I may stick to designing my own database though

IrfanView & a database should give me a reasonable workaround until the killer application appears

Many thanks for the link!

Hi,
Resample algorithm???

Sorry to tell you, I don’t know!

Download and test the program.

You will find out best yourself if it’s good enough for you.

I use it for archiving all my pictures and also to generate web pages.

You have the opportunity to let people download pictures in full

resolution if they like. The preview pictures can be set to what

your like. There is more possibilities in IPTC and EXIF than any

other program.

Try it you’ll like it!

A couple of questions spring to mind after having a look at the website and they are
what is the resample algorithm
what size (or options) for offline images
how extensive is EXIF & IPTC data

At 489 Euros for the pro version I may stick to designing my own database though

I’m currently working on one, but it’s very, very alpha at the moment, I don’t use categories, but do track by location, category could be used instead of location though……. I do have an EXIF library but have not tested using it though…..

If there are features you would like to see, send them to me, and I’ll think about incorporating them. My program is aimed for a $20 market not a $400 market, may even be free…..

Do you suppose FIle Maker Pro would allow the same thing? I just want to insert a CD with graphics, have a program generate thumbnails automatically, and put them into a database, with keywords, titles, captions, dates, etc. automatically filled in.

ACDSee 7 has offline media support.
IMatch has offline media support.
Photoshop Album 3 (part of Photoshop Elements 3) has offline media support.

All of these allows you to catalog CDs/DVDs, or even catalog files on harddisks and burn them to cd later on, keeping track of where you moved them. IMatch doesn’t have built-in burn capabilities but you can tell it to relocate folders to a cd once you’ve burned it.

If you just want to take a bunch of folders on your harddisk and quickly dump them to a cd with an index and thumbnails, ArchiveCreator is a good choice, although it has a problem with localized characters in the folder names at the moment.

Good luck TW

Judging by the posts in this NG a killer app image browser seems to be a good product to develope.

FWIW the one in PSCS does the trick but there are times when I want to zip in & out without starting PSCS (if you know what I mean)

The basic wish list?:
+ ability to handle offline images (network, CD, DVD, removable disks, removable media)
++ options: thumbnails = no good for me, I’d prefer original image size at JPEG low (level 5 or thereabouts) This would be nice for users to pick and choose.
++ that the image copy is carried out in a suitably sophisticated way so that the original image EXIF & IPTC data is transferred, copied or appended to the copied lo-res image
++ that the browser works independent of directory tree, possible a la Picasa? but with user switch to "update cache now" It’s a bit of a pain starting it in a rush and having to brew a coffee while it trundles through disks on an auto update/refresh. Possibly refresh folder, refresh disk/media, refresh the lot? Could be troublesome if a networked ‘pooter is reassigned a slot on the same network
+ IPTC keyword search including 2-way revision to IPTC updates with conflict resolution in case both the original image and copied image have had IPTC data revised
+ reference to image and media it is stored on (CD name…)

I think that is about it?

Basically a Picasa front end whacked on to a reasonable database

Good luck and may the gods shine on you and your endevours 🙂

Aerticus

+ ability to show PSDs too as well as the usual bunch of images

One item that is REALLY important to me:

The ability for this tool to handle RAW images as well as the usual JPG/TIFF suspects. The reason for this is that I don’t want to have JPGs duplicates of my RAW files – for obvious storage reasons, and I don’t want to convert my RAWs to JPG – for equally obvious reasons. However – I would like to be able to browse them quickly without having to load up PSCS or Nikon Capture/View….

I’m not connected with Irfan … but I’m happy with IrfanView.

Have you tried it … it can be set up to work with RAW files if you download and install the required RAW files from the plugins section of the web site.

I think we ought to be crystal clear on the spec for TW.

It is image asset management really in a very popular form.

The RAW thing is a bit of a smelling fish (I think you earthlings call it a red herring?)

Even in RAW peeps should be able to say: export this lo-res image to my asset management program, confrim EXIF, confirm IPTC and pop – off it goes.

Tw: it aint no image processor, think image asset management and resist every temptation to make it complicated.

This is bells n whsitles elementary double quick functionality that every digital camera owner will require in the 2nd year of ownership. Moreso when more than 1 digicam is in the house.

Image processing takes more spheroids than this baby has.

You’ve seen the ads about what a little smart fast fish can do what great big huge muckle things can’t.? Heck, they’ve even made a movie about it

Project mission statement: The second most difficult task will be deciding what to leave out – the first? Deciding what to put in!

As I keep saying, ThumbsPlus from www.cerious.com (though the EXIF problem still remains at the moment – it’s mainly due to problems with the camera manufacturers use of data fields).

|Forgive the shot from left field, but as a database person let me say you |don’t need a "relational database", whatever the hype mavens are calling |just about any data or file system today.

|Look into Adobe Photo Album, or _any_ picture filing system that uses a |broad search engine. Start surfing.

I think I directed you to the usenet FileMaker group. A photograph is just another field object. Go there and don’t be put off by people who don’t understand that your interest is the photo object. It’s all the same. You will have to enter keywords, and so-forth regardless of application.

Thanks. I’ve gone to the FMPro newsgroup and will try. The techno-babble there is, however, daunting.
