See my reply in the "Serious CS2 installation problem" thread…that was one of three problems I had and the solution that I posted (from Adobe) may solve your problem as well. Are you running any AV software? I hope so, but that was also the cause of all the cases of this problem that my Adobe tech support person dealt with.

I have just installed the PS CS2 on my computer and has successfully activated the program thru internet.
However, I keep getting a message that my Adobe Updater could not be started and I was told to reinstall my software.
Do I really have to reinstall the software and to go throuht that tedious procedure of activation and registration process again.
Or should I take the box back to the retailer to have it exchanged. Brian
I have the same problem on my laptop. It is not the fault of the cd, because on my desktop I don’t have that problem. Hope someone will come with a suggestion Nicole
I totally join the "Club" of people who can’t get the "Updater" working. I also have tried to reinstall the Photoshop CS2 a couple of times, no effect – I run a Win XP Prof SP2-version, Danish language…hopefully someone will soon come back with proposals as to how to eliminate this problem, thanks+
I also would like to join the club of people with the same problem. I have been in contact with the on-line support for Europe where they suggested to disable my firewall (Norton Internet Security) and my antivirus protection.I have tried that, but it does not solve my problem. Hope someone can help me to solve my problem.
This may be of no help but does disabling the Updater in the Update prefs get rid of the message? You can try to disable it by clicking on Updates (if that is enabled) in the Help menu. On my machine it tries to check for updates, finds none and then comes back with a dialog allowing you to get into Update prefs where it can be disabled. If Updates is disabled, try clicking Photoshop Online – this also brought up the check for updates dialog on my machine I think.
Here is the fix from Adobe for the updater (at least for my computer):
Start computer in SAFE mode (F8) Log into Administrator account Browse to My Computer -> C: -> Documents and Settings Right click on All Users Select Properties Select the Security tab Click on Advanced Highlight Administrators Check only "Replace permissions…" Click on Apply Click on OK Exit out and reboot normally Put in Photoshop CS2 disk When menu starts, select Explore CD Contents Open Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) CS2 folder Open commonfilesinstaller Double click "Adobe Common File Installer.msi" And follow the prompts from there

I too have the exact same problem. I have deleted and re-installed the program, and it does not make the message go away.
It is not the CD, as I downloaded the update from the website.
This is from another forum (I don’t take any responsibility for this advice, but after a search is was the only ‘solution’ that i’ve come across – follow at your own risk)…

Turns out the problem was NOT a registry problem (didn’t think it was). It was a files folder permissions problem believed to have been set by AV software."

I have just tried the above mentioned solution but that did not solve the problem on my computer. By the way, I am running a Danish version of Windows XP Prof and I’m not sure whether that make any differens. More suggestion please how to solve the updater problem.
Torben, I am also a Dane, and I share your observations in this regard, also I am using a Danish WIN XP Prof version, and I seem to believe that it is most likely som that the Danish version is the obstacle…I wish that the Adobe people would come back with some suggestions for solving the problem…Best regards+
I’m a Dane too running a Danish WIN XP Home Edition on my stationary. I tried the suggestion above with no success. I got a fix through the forum for the issue around Bridge not being able to run. This also seemed to be due to an issue in the Danish XP. I’m running an English WIN XP professional on my portable without the problem, nor the Bridge problem. Perhaps it is a revenge for something Eric the Red did, when he first came to America.
hi hi…if they hesitate too long in Adobe to come up with a solution in this regard (the Updater) we shall have to send the children of Eric the Red over there again…usually, however, the Adobe-people, in my experience, are very friendly and cooperative+
I had this message the first time I loaded CS2 and also could not get Bridge to load. I was going to install another XP system on another hard drive on the same computer and try that. Anyway to cut a long story short I needed to go into my Bios and click on Load failsafe settings. Once it had loaded and I reloaded CS2 everything is now fine. No error on updater and Bridge has loaded. However I do have a windows explorer problem and everytime I try to maximise the picture window Microsoft tell me Windows Explorer has experienced a problem and will have to close. As long as I don’t try to maximise the window it is fine. Any ideas?
No not over clocking but I was fiddling with the hard drives until the system wouldn’t load so thats why I went into load failsafe. It just happened that it corrected the updater problem. I’ve just now sorted the explorer windows problem It was a setting in my video card everything ok now The only thing wrong with my system is that I wont leave it alone I’m beginning to learn though
Finally I found the explanation to the Updater issue on Danish systems. It is due to the good old national character issue. See the workaround in document # 331589 in the Adobe database. You’ll keep having issues when starting Photoshop, but now you at least will know why. Note that the famous Eric the Red also has a national character in his name. What a coincidence 🙂
Another Dane with the Updater problem when runing Photoshop on a Danish XP prof version. I have tried the suggestions mentioned in document 331589 and it works just fine. But people from the other Scandinavian contries must experience the same problem as they are using the same national character? How did you solve yout Bridge problem?
Well, what do you do if you are not operating in Danish XP?
I just have a normal English Windows XP version, and also have the Updater issue, along with not being able to use Bridge. I regularly check my registry, delete temp files, old programs, etc. My 8 mo. old system is very clean.
I have always been pleased with Adobe’s support and quality of products. But I have to say, I am quite irritated with all of this. And, having to pay $39 to possibly fix something they created, is simply unacceptable!
Shame on you Adobe; you are loosing credibility! I hope we don’t have more of this to look forward to after the merger.
The trick was to run the updater manually from c:\common files\adobe\updater. This is obviously preventing Photoshop from doing it in vain. Perhaps I’ll get the issue again within a month, if there is some kind of periodic checking going on.
This may be of no help but does disabling the Updater in the Updat prefs get rid of the message? You can try to disable it by clicking o Updates (if that is enabled) in the Help menu. On my machine it trie to check for updates, finds none and then comes back with a dialo allowing you to get into Update prefs where it can be disabled. I Updates is disabled, try clicking Photoshop Online – this also brough up the check for updates dialog on my machine I think.
Hi all,
If there is an option within Photoshop to turn disable the update (although it seems the updater must be functional to access this optio 😐 ), surely there is a registry entry that can be changed usin Regedit or similar programs to acheive the same goal. I don’t min using Photoshop without it constantly trying to update itself, it i however very annoying have the error displayed every time the progra starts!
I would love to know of any way to get rid of the error message.

I would love to know of any way to get rid of the error message. I am using English language Win XP Pro.
In Photoshop or ImageReady, choose Edit > Preferences > Adobe Online (Windows and Mac OS 9) or Photoshop > Preferences > Adobe Online (Mac OS X). Choose an item from the Check for Updates pop-up menu to determine how often Photoshop launches an automatic update
If you don’t know, Adobe GoLive is a web-authorizing and site-management tool. This version also has a lot of new features that make it easier to use with Photoshop, Illustrator, and LiveMotion files.
Just thought you might want to check out this great deal!
