– Create a new document 8×10
– Fill background with color / texture to taste
– Open team photo
– Drag&drop team photo layer onto target image
– Place team photo on target image with move tool. Maybe resize/move with transform tool – Add layer effects
– Do the same for the individual photos
– Add a text layer
That gives you the first image which you may save. For the others, you will have to repeat the drag&drop, move/resize steps of the individual photos. I guess that may be performed in an action as well.
Good luck
Sven
In CS2, if you place the images instead of dragging them, they will be "smart objects" and you can then use this as a true template, enabling you to simply load a different image into the smart object.

Sounds like a good argument to upgrade. Wasn’t aware of that

For a different approach … try making the background something to do with the sport. If it is baseball, do an image of the baseball field and make itn the background. Double click the image thumbnail in the layers palette. Since you want an exact size … make a new canvas slightly smaller than 8"x6". Drag it on top of the background and put it where you want the larger opening. Now click Select > Load Selection. Now click the background layer and then Delete on your keyboard. Now click Layer > New Layer. You still have the marching ants so, while on the new transparent layer, click Select > Modify > Border and try 12 pixels. Now click Edit > Fill > Foreground Color and fill it with anything. Later you can click that layer & add a style. Repeat these steps for the samller opening. I’d suggest making a new canvas slightly smaller than 2"x3" and then use the Eliptical Marquee Tool on it. First double click the thumbnail and then click Select > Inverse and delete on your keyboard. You now have an oval for the smaller size. Move it on your background and as before make a new layer etc. Now you can click on each opening layer and add a style. Finally add another transparent new layer and add your team name and players information. Have fun; Craig Flory
Michael (or anyone else who can help) – thanks for the reply but I am a novice as far as the workings of Photoshop are concerned and I got myself in a real mess trying to do as you suggested with "smart objects" and the Help section just confused me more.
Can you give me a step-by-step guide please.
Many thanks for your patience.
If you have the teams name and their logos name in a spreadsheet, it is possible to use variables to automate the changes. (images get loaded , text changed…)
There is a video by Julieanne Kost at Photoworkshop.com that explains it.
Kevin, you have a good idea, but basically, PS doesn’t support the model of templates that you’d like to impose.
You can eaily automate the procedure of placing individual head shots with an Action, once you have the team background photo placed. Read up on creating actions — it’s basically a recorder that lets you play back a series of commands.
But if you want to go beyond that, I’d suggest you mosey over to the PS Scripting forumn and ask around over there, or find someone who will trade you dollars for a script that does what you want.

I haven’t tried smart objects yet; just basing my suggestion on what’s in the manual.
It sounds like you wanted a simple way to do this … and my explanation was too complex. I have made dozens as "stock templetes". Please write & I’ll send you one I’ve made, to see if you like it. My studio address is .
