creating selection around soft shadow

In PS7, if you wanted to create a selection around text with a "soft shadow" layer style, you would merge the text into a new layer by control+shift+alt+E, and then control+click on the new layer to get a perfect selection (including the areas inside closed letters), that you could then use to create an alpha channel.

I can’t get this to work in PS CS2. Any suggestions?

I just found the answer accidently!

In PS CS2, after merging into a new layer by control+shift+alt+E, you need to control+click on the LAYER THUMBNAIL!!!

Why would they have changed that? Just to trip me up! 🙂

No, to allow multiple layer selection like you select multiple files in the os.
