Adjustment layers are great for keeping records of the tools and values used in making corrections. They are good references for making similar corrections on another image months later. But a few tools are not available as adjustment layers, and I have been using a round about way to keep records for them. These include USM, Apply Image, Shadow and Highlight, etc.

For USM, I would create a top layer by merging all the layers below it. After applying USM, I would name the top layer with something like: "USM_200_.6_0" to record the amount, radius and threshold. Unfortunately, adding such layers would create a huge file. And for tools with many variables such as Apply Image, the layer’s name can get very long.

Is there an easier way to do this on CS? Thanks.

You can turn on the history log(Preferences>General(History log is about half way down the page) and set it for both Metadata and Text file…This will create a folder either on your desktop or in your My documents folder that tracks keystrokes performed in Photoshop during a session…this can effect and slow performance however…

Use the History log. It’s made for this. Turn it on in General Preferences and store the log in the metadata.

PS I’ve never noticed a performance issue with this.

It can make opening the program lag and sometimes, especially with small amounts of RAM there seems to be a lag when the history log is writing…at least I have experienced this with our instructional machines…(495 of RAM and 40 gig hardrives)

Thanks, I’ll give that a shot. Will the log keep every keystroke, or is it smart enough to collapse and keep only the last keystroke on a variable? For example in USM amount, if I key in 100, then 200 and OK, will the log keep both 100 and 200, or only 200?

Also, after creating such a log and closing the image file, will reopening and edit the file create a different log file, or will the new edits be added to the old log file?

I suppose I can find these out by trying, but thought I’ll get a jump on this.
