RAW vs TIF file size

This is a curious question rather than a practical one. Why are original RAW capture file sizes so much smaller than the same file saved as a TIF? Since the RAW capture contains *all* the original info shouldn’t it be larger?

Because the raw file is really a one channel grayscale rendition of the scene that is interpolated to three channel RGB through your raw conversion software of choice. Uncompressed raw files are 1/3 the size of uncompressed tiffs from the same file. Some camera manufacturers compress the raw files, some don’t, which accounts for varying sizes of raw files from the same camera.
