I need to edit images that are in .rgb format but whenever I try to open one in Photoshop CS I get the error "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document". I used to open this type of file with CS all the time on another machine but since I changed machines I can’t. What can I do to remedy this? Is there a preference or a plug in that I need?

Thanks

What program was it created in? I don’t recognise the extenstion .RGB, nor can I find it in Photoshop’s supported file formats (i could be wrong tho’). I only know of RGB as being a colour mode.

I created it in photoshop. You can just save them out as basic .rgb files, or at least you used to be able to. I sure hope you still can.

I don’t think there is such a thing as a .rgb Sounds like you were adding that extension yourself, which of course, Photoshop would not be able to recognize as a file format. When you saved the file, what format did you choose? (tif, jpeg, photoshop document, etc?)

edit- it may be some other format for which the plug in is needed. See photoshop help for installing a "plug-in module" If there really is such a format as .rgb, you may have to copy the plug-in from the other computer. I would recommend using a more common file-format like tif, otherwise you may have compatibility problems with the file in the future or across other software.

Well, it was a valid file format in CS version 9. I just checked on another machine, the old machine I used to make it, and it has photoshop cs version 9, versus the one I have now that has 9.0.1. In version 9, there is a SGI format under Open and Save As that also includes (*.SGI;*.BW;*.RGB;*.RGBA). These have been common file formats for years, basic .rgb files. Several pieces of 3D modeling software I’m working with require them to be used as textures on models. Guess I’m back to that other machine unless someone knows how to make that useable in the version I have. Or maybe I can uninstall the update.

Just save out on the old machine to a format recognized by CS2.

I have never heard of .rgb either. Nor are there any SGI formats listed in either Save As or Open As in my copy of CS. Maybe you had a plugin on the other machine that adds this?

That format is not installed by default, you’ll find in the extras CD of Photoshop/Creative Suite. BTW, Photoshop 9 is CS 2.

When ever I have saved a SGI file (for 3-D work) from photoshop its always saved with the extension SGI never RGB. When I export a SGI file form my 3-D software, then I ge thte rgb extension.

Maybe it is a plugin, if so, I need it on this machine too. I need to further manipulate the files and save them back as rgb and to do it all on the other machine isn’t really practical.

Yeah, I’m finding that I can use other types of files in my 3D software, but I already have loads of textures in rgb that I would like to reuse and alter to be used in new models. Hmm.

Ok, got it. There was a plug in file on the other machine.

Thanks for the help.

There is also my SGI/RGB Format plugin <http://telegraphics.com.au/sw/#sgiformat> which works with all versions of Photoshop.

nobody reads post #3… especially when post 4 is there to complain how one machine will have to be used over another, when post 3 explained how to get the capability from one machine to the other. I feel so invisible. 🙁
