Using Photoshop 6.0, Windows XP. When I "Save As" the new file saves at 72ppi no matter what the resolution of the file I saved from was. What do I change so the new file is at the same ppi as the original?

This does not sound possible, even as a preference problem.

Is it possible that you are saving Photoshop EPS files with vector information, then when reopening them in Photoshop you breezed past the rasterize dialog which defaults to 72?

Are you using "Save for Web"? That would account for it.

Susan,

What format are you saving to? .gif for example, has nowhere in the file format to store resolution data, just x pixels by y pixels. It is up to the receiving application to decide at size to open it, and the default will be 72 ppi.

I’m starting with a JPG at 300 ppi, Save As (Ctrl-Shift-S) JPG, the newly saved file is at 72 ppi. No other file formats, no vector files, no Save for Web. New phenomenon, I haven’t had this happen before.

Susan,

the newly saved file is at 72 ppi.<<

Is that when you re-open it in Photoshop? Is the pixel-count the same as before you saved?

I was writing down the exact sequence of what I was doing and suddenly realized where the problem might have come – the step before the Save As was Crop, and it’s possible that 72 ppi was specified there – I didn’t think about it because I almost NEVER set that. I’ll check tonight. Now I feel so foolish!
Thanks for your attention. If that wasn’t the issue, I’ll come back to the forum. Thanks again, Susan

Worth remembering though.

Those sticky crop settings can cause all sorts of mysterious effects.

That is a good example of where the Edit log can come in handy!
