I have a psd file that when you try to open in Illustrator, you get a "photoshop file not readable" error. (this message would imply a problem with the photoshop file, and not an error reaching max limits)
the file is 24in x 52in 450 pix / in.

My System: P4, w/ 4GB RAM (w/ 3GB switch in boot.ini), 4 SATA hard drives, … 2 drives are Striped for Drive C for speed, .. 2 drives are Mirrored for Drive D. Virtual Mem = 6GB on Drive C.

Running CS2 w/ updates,

I made a NEW file in photoshop, .. 24in x 52 in, .. 450 pixels per in, Color RGB mode, don’t edit or add anything, just save the file. Illustrator will not open the file saying…. "Photoshop file not readable". I gradually went down in pix / in to see where the file would open in Illustrator …

At 352 pixels per in, (18,304 px width, 8448 px high), the file opens NO PROBLEMs at all in Illlustrator.

At 353 pixels per in (and up), (18,356 px x 8472 px) the file gives "Photoshop file not readable" when I try to open in Illlustrator.

Can someone enlighten me on this?? I thought I could at least go 30,000 pixels and import over into Illustrator. Maybe someone could try and duplicate this on your machine, …. to see if my problem is related to something specific in my system or settings, vs. CS2 software…

thanks in advance …
Allen

Do you mean import or open?

What format is the file saved in?

Either one. Save the file as a .psd file, … then either opening in Illustrator, or placing in Illustrator will give the error message.

please try it
thank you

Allen,

Illustrator definitely has a max size that it will place for raster images – probably 500 meg. from your trial results.

Try placing the file as a linked image. Go to the image import options after you click on Edit>Place (Left hand lower corner of the dialog)Make sure Link File is checked…

This might work as it will be a low res preview linked to a high res image instead of being embedded in the Illustrator file.
