Help with Offset in PS CS2: It’s not working!

I have been scratching my head trying to figure out where I have gone wrong with making a seamless tile/texture!

I found a few great tutorials on the subject and am using this one: < http://biorust.com/index.php?page=tutorial_detail&tutid= 18>

I have followed the directions (as far as I can see) perfectly, but I do not end up with my texture splitting the way they show in the tutorial.

I just end up with a big gap in between the tile and then nothing repeating on the left side. The tiled images are not centering in the offset screen at all. I am supposed to end up with 4 offset images and I just get two.

I have tried different values for the offset and I have tried several other tutorials using offset, but all give me the same wrong result.

Can someone help me and let me know what I am doing wrong? I am using Offset on a 200px image with vertical and horizontal offset set to +100.

I can’t see the image you linked to (It wants a password), but it sounds like you need to set "Undefined Areas" to "Wrap Around".

I have it set to "Wrap Around" and also I am viewing the image at 100%.

I’m totally baffled!

What you describe is the result when you did NOT set it to wrap around.

I think you just made a mistake in the settings.

I have checked and double checked the settings. Did you look at the screen shot I posted? You will see clearly that "Wrap Around’ is selected.

That is what makes this issue so baffling. Wrap Around is selected!

Is there anything else that might cause this to happen? Perhaps a glitch in Photoshop itself?

I can not for the life of me figure out why this would not work properly.

Just as an aside… baring the use of Offset, is there another way to make a seamless texture? I am in real need of this today!

OK the issue has been solved.

What the problem was is that my image was 200px by 200px. That is too large for Offset to work with apparently. I reduced the image to 150px by 150px and the offset filter worked.

Issue solved…. and I am relieved! LOL

No, Offset works quite well up to 300,000 pixels in either dimension. 200 pixels is nothing….

Hi again Chris,

Well, clearly it does not do this on my system!

Why would it not work on a 200px image and then work on a 150px one?

Makes no sense to me if it is supposed to work on larger sized files.

I did everything correctly… so I am assuming it is a glitch in my Photoshop or my computer is so ancient it can’t handle something in the computation. I have a 550mhz PIII running on OS Windows XP Home SP2, with 256MB RAM

Do you think that might be the problem?

Offset works on 200 pixels and 2000 pixels just fine.
Again: you are making a mistake somewhere (like having extra data off the side of the layer).

Try using Image->Reveal All to see any extra data off the side of the layers.

Yes, a PIII with 256 Meg is ANCIENT, I can’t believe XP will run on it! But if Photoshop launches, it should still work.

I did "Reveal All" to see if there was extra data. None.

Again: I made no mistake. Trust me on this. I am a meticulous sort of girl. Didn’t you see the screenshot?

Believe me, I can’t put this emphatically enough…. I did everything totally by the book.

Yes, my computer is Ancient. I am trying to be as good a little girl as I can so Santa can bring me a new puter this Christmas.

LOL

Anyway, for now the problem is solved. I hope I don’t have a need for a bigger swatch of texture anytime before I get my brand new monster computer system!

Your screen shot still doesn’t tell us everything.
Yes, you selected "wrap around".

But the vertical wrap says that there IS something else in the image, at least vertically. And because it offset horizontally, I suspect there is some other data off to the side.

Again, Offset is very simple, and works with much larger images. And if Photoshop is working at all, Offset will be working.
