"Placing" in AI and "embedding"

I’ve have some printing issues that occurred because I drew images in PS7 and then "placed" them in AI in order to avoid the dumb, opaque white box-background from copy-paste.

In a large poster I burned for the printer, he complained that many individual files were not there. It turns out that every drawing I "placed" was not "embedded" and I had to send individual .psd files of all needed.

Why are "placed" files not "embedded" in AI and what am I not doing to make them so?

Thanks much for info—I’m anxious to learn what I’m missing…..mm

That’s an Illustrator issue, not an Photoshop issue.

The answer is to uncheck the link choice when placing. You could of course have saved yourself all of this trouble by simply saving as PDF from Illustrator.

IIRC, there is also an option to include linked file when saving your Illustrator document

Thanks guys, sorry I went to the wrong forum. The printer insists on .psd files, not pdf’s…..

Robert, what is the "link choice"…..if ya’ can’t (or shouldn’t) answer I’ll poke my head over to AI…..
An CN, where/what is the "option to include linked file"? As you can guess, I’m really learning AI and had to jump right into it….thank you much….mm

When you hit file place in AI, there’s a check box for linking the graphic. Make sure it’s not checked.

FWIW, I’d be looking for a new printer. Any printer requiring native Photoshop (or Illustrator) files is one to be avoided at all cost.

I’ll also point out that if you save your AI files with PDF compatibility, they can be opened in Acrobat/Reader quite nicely and everything will be there.

Marie,

.The printer insists on .psd files, not pdf’s<<

The .pdf doesn’t replace the .PSDs – it replaces the .ai or .eps that you are sending to the printer.

You know, we haven’t established what version of AI is being used here. I just noticed Marie is still using PS 7.0.

Can’t remember that far back. You might want to pop over to the Illy forum.

I seem to recall that for older versions of AI, the way I embedded was to save as an EPS file (don’t know if it was for version 10 or a previous one

At version 10 I would save as PDF.

Thanks guys—printer doesn’t like pdf’s–wants only psd’s. I’ll be trying to save work as pdf’s and export it, open it in PS and re-save as psd. The first one worked fine, but I haven’t tried it with text yet….mm

I strongly suggest you find another printer. This one is ill-equipped for the 21st century. You’re jumping through way too many hoops for this guy and you’re sacrificing quality at the same time.
