What is a "pick" tool? What is your Photoshop version? I can’t reproduce the behavior you describe.

Sorry, I got it. My "test" picture was too simple. Now I load a real photo so I can see this behavior too. Very interesting and need to be investigating. (I am collect all Photoshop shortcuts and put them in database)

I am very sorry again. I definetily miss this shortcut in by database but it is "well known". ctrl+shift+click on channel ADD selection to the current one. Deselect all and press ctrl+shift+channel. First time the picture will be the same as for pressing ctrl+channel. Now press ctrl+shift+channel several times and you will see the difference.
