I have some Illustrator files I placed as Smart Objects into a CMYK Photoshop file. The Illustrator files are CMYK and al lelements are white (0.,0,0,0) or black (0,0,0,100). Why are they converted to Rich Black? How can I prevent this?

It depends on your color settings, and the profiles specified in the Illustrator file.

[bleep] The Illustrator file is in CMYK mode. What CMYK profile can I select so that CMYK values are NOT changed when moving the artwork to a CMYK Photoshop file? Any will do.

Scott,

Create a custom profile with Black generation set to Max

Or just use the same profile for the parent document as for the Illustrator file. Or have your CMYK preferences set to preserve CMYK values.
