Target the mask, then paint.
And make sure you have the right paint color for what you want (white on white doesn’t work so well…)
And make sure that the color blending Mode set for the brush (up in the Options Bar) is set to "Normal". There are other Modes which work. Test each setting to see which ones work and which don’t.
AWhat about your Opacity and Flow settings (also in the Options Bar)?
Thank you for the replies. I’ve done both of these things and everything is in working order, it is really so strange. Now what has become even weirder is that I can erase within my mask. I’ve gone to that as a workaround, adjusting my background color for different results from the erasing but darn if this isn’t just going to drive me crazy! Thanks again for the input! 🙂
Alt+Click on the Mask used to work but it has been a long time since I tried it.
Once the mask has been opened and displayed onscreen it can be treated much the same as any other image with effects used where required.
Dear Meredith
I am having the same problem and an searching for a reply to my question on this forum. I see that nobody has answered and resolved your problem.
I am also using the eraser back and forth as a work around but do not know why my brush will no longer do this.
But i can mask on and off with the pencil tool – this is bizarre!
Are you using a wacom tablet?
I am using a wacom and have get to find a fix for this. I have just sort of gotten used to doing the eraser thing. It is bizarre, and I have no idea how to fix it, sorry!
Did you [Alt. + click] directly on your layer’s mask so that your are using a brush directly upon the black/white view as DEEBS above suggested? It does sound as if you’ve got something extra on.
I am also using aq wacom perhaps it’s something to do with that. I am moving my computer over the weekend so I might try once wacom is disconnected to see if it goes back to what it was like before.
Just make sure that the Wacom tool (pen or mouse) that you are not using is well clear of the tablet.
Dear Meredith
For the first time I got my masking option to work. I revisited the wacom site and it reminded me that the oppposite end of my brush was the eraser. So in brush mode instead of toggling between black and white foreground colours you can tip the eraser. At first it didn’t work but the top option bar was still at 4%opacity and in overlay mode. I changed these to 100% and Normal blend mode. Then I went into the brush palette options and made sure these were in order. Because actually at that point my brush wouldn’t even paint in a plain white background.
Once I got back on the mask and started tipping my eraser up the back round for the brush everything is working.
Hope this helps.
Anita.
