I want to create an effect that is seen in alot of "modern" web sites.

lets say I have a stencil text, and I have a texture (which is in color) and I want to "add" this texture, per say to the text to make the font look distressed

I want to say load selection, then paste into??? can anyone help??

Hello Esteban,

Here are a couple of ways, the 2nd being the easiest and most versatile:

A – PASTE INTO (Good for pasting an image as a non-uniform texture)

1) Open your texture image, Select All, copy
2) Open your text image, create your stencil text and rasterize the text. This should result in a transparent layer except where the text exists.
3) Using the Magic Wand with the Contiguous option deselected, select one of the characters in the text. This should effectively select all of the text.
4) Select Edit > Paste Into and you should see the image in your cliboard pasted into the area defined by the text selection boundaries.

B – TEXT LAYER STYLE

1) Create your text…it will be a layer upon doing so (PS7, CS, CS2, maybe earlier too, I don’t recall).
2) Open the Layer Style dialog for your text layer, and enable Texture, choosing any existing texture or creating your own new style. Apply the style.

The convenience of the second approach is that the texture can be easily changed and the text does not have to be rasterized. But, the texture is one which is uniformly applied across the selection.

Hope that helps,

Daryl

Even easier…

Create text on bottom layer
Add texture as a fill layer drag in as a regular layer or create a pattern from the texture and use Edit>Fill>Pattern or Fill Adjustment layer
Place your cursor between the two layers in the layers palette holding down the ALT key. YOu will see the cursor change to two circles and an arrow…when this happens click the mouse

Text remains editable until the layers are flattened…
